The Story Behind the Maker Patches

Designer Carl DeCaire shares the motivation behind creating a set of patches for Big Cartel.

Patches have been around for centuries - from ancient civilizations to modern day military and space expeditions. They're a symbol of honor and serve as a reminder for all of our accomplishments and hard work.

When designing new products for our shop, we had a few goals in mind we wanted to achieve. We looked at adding variety to our shop and different ways we could use older designs. We considered their costs and packaging. And whether or not you could buy them as part of a set or something individually.

We came up with a handful of ideas and sketches, and we’re already selling new items like our notebooks and enamel pins that came from those discussions. Deciding to create patches felt like a good next step and also gave us some ideas for future products we may sell (sorry, no spoilers!). Our patches were a culmination of all our work, using our favorite mottos, some designs that we loved but didn’t have a home, and new illustrations that filled in the gaps.

Astronauts use patches to mark their missions, the military uses them to represent rank, and the adventurous use them to remember that cold night in Yellowstone. Our patches represent you, the artist, for the hard work, the late nights, and all the great things you do. Since sewing is an art of its own and you might be busy with your other creative pursuits, these patches are ready to be ironed onto your favorite backpack or jacket, so you can be prepared to face whatever comes next.
