Getting the word out about your shop on social media is tricky.
Posting a simple link and comment to “Check it out” won’t cut it. You want your followers to really get a feel for your product and brand, so that more of them actually will check it out, and hopefully they’ll start spreading the word too.
Well, we can help with that. Starting today, Big Cartel now automatically includes HTML meta tags for your shop’s products and pages that social networks can use to turn simple links into detailed information. This means Pinterest will now show your product’s name, price, image, and availability in their Rich Pins, and others like Facebook and Twitter will now include an image and summary anytime someone shares a link to your shop.
We also used this opportunity to improve a few other HTML tags that should help with SEO. This all gets a bit technical and nerdy, but the bottom line is that these upgrades, combined with the possibility that more people are now sharing and linking to your shop from social media, could give you a nice boost in search engines like Google and Bing.
One heads up - if you had previously customized your theme’s HTML to generate these tags yourself, it’d be a good idea to remove them to prevent duplication. Let us know if you need a hand with that.
